Regular or Decaf? Keep The Caffeine…The Chemicals in Decaf Just Might Kill You!

Altering the state of the natural always comes with consequences.  From taking the fat out of milk to removing the caffeine from a coffee bean, the process behind altering the natural state (and sometimes the chemicals used to accomplish it) might surprise you!

I’m a serious coffee drinker.  I don’t drink gallons of coffee a day, but the few cups that I drink each day are one of my life’s greatest pleasures. A hot cup of coffee doesn’t just satisfy my taste buds, it conjures up a whole lot of memories of times spent with loved ones over a good cup of coffee.  It’s my “comfort food.”

I don’t load my coffee up with artificial flavors and I don’t buy coffee concoctions that I can’t even pronounce.  I LOVE the natural bold flavor of black coffee. I don’t want a fancy drip coffee maker or a “single serving” multi (artificial) flavored coffee option.  I don’t grind my coffee beans and I don’t use a french press.  I prefer an old-fashioned percolator.  The coffee is unbelievable and the sound and smells coming from the percolator make the coffee taste even better!

You wouldn’t catch me with a cup of decaf for all of the money in the world. If coffee works against me one day, and it causes me to lose sleep…I’ll lose the coffee before I’d switch to decaf.   Not only does it seem pointless to drink coffee with no “kick”, but if you’re a black coffee connoisseur like I am, you know how bad black decaf tastes! If  not for the fact that I HATE the taste of decaf, I may have listened to my “health nut” friends who have preached the dangers of regular/caffeinated coffee to me for years!  Boy, do they have a lot to learn about decaf!

Have you ever wondered how they take caffeine out of a coffee bean?  It certainly isn’t grown that way.  The label doesn’t say NON-caffeinated…it says DE-caffeinated. So how does it lose its caffeine?   A Methylene Chloride wash is the most common way used by the coffee industry to decaffeinate beans before they are actually roasted.  That even SOUNDS toxic.  The following description of Methylene Chloride was pulled directly from the OSHA site:   

Methylene Chloride

Methylene chloride, also called dichloromethane, is a volatile, colorless liquid with a chloroform-like odor. Methylene chloride is used in various industrial processes, in many different industries including paint stripping, pharmaceutical manufacturing, paint remover manufacturing, and metal cleaning and degreasing. The most common means of exposure to methylene chloride is inhalation and skin exposure. OSHA considers methylene chloride to be a potential occupational carcinogen.

So…coffee beans are washed in a chemical that is known to cause cancer just to remove the caffeine that some say is bad for your health? Does that make any sense to you?  If it does, I have some oceanfront property in Arizona that I’d like to talk to you about as soon as possible.

Do yourself a favor.  If you don’t want to partake of caffeine, the next time you are asked “Regular or Decaf” just pass on the coffee all together.  That’s the healthiest caffeine-free option when it comes to coffee.

Naturally, your coffee is only as good as the water it’s made with.  If you opt for tap water to make your coffee, you’re already signing up for hundreds of harmful chemicals (some know carcinogens) with the water alone.  Add in a little Methylene chloride and you’re good to go!

Use of a wet-nurse  was a common practice before the introduction of the feeding bottle and baby formula.  In fact, by the early 1800’s wet nursing had become a well-organized profession with contracts and laws designed to regulate its practice.  Although today we may frown upon the idea of someone breastfeeding a child not their own,  death was the only other option until the mid 180o’s.

The first baby “formula” was developed in 1860 by German scientist Justus von Leibig.   It was powdered, just like the formula we use today. It consisted of wheat flour, dehydrated cow’s milk, malt flour, and potassium bicarbonate (an additive used as a base in foods and to regulate pH). To make the formula, mothers had to mix the powder with warmed cow’s milk.  Leibig’s soluble “infant food” was first marketed in the United States in 1869 and sold for $1.00  per bottle.  That was a small fortune back then but keep in mind that the use of formula (with the exception of the elite) was for emergency purposes only.  It’s a whole different ballgame today.

Shortly after the development of Leibig’s, the Nestle Company came up with its own version of formula, which was basically the same as Leibig’s with 2 (not so) minor changes.  It didn’t have the potassium bicarbonate, and Nestle added sugar to their formula.  I guess Nestle thought that starving babies wouldn’t drink their concoction unless it was loaded with sugar (like all of their other products).  This formula sold for half the price of Leibig’s, and it turned out to be more cost-effective in other ways, too.  Nestle’s formula needed only water for mixing.  That’s too bad.  Cow’s milk was actually safe to drink (and good for you) in the late 1800’s.  Oh well…  Thanks, Nestle.

Sounds like the makings of a successful business to me!  Make it convenient…add sugar to make it taste good…make it more affordable  and tell the world that it’s just as healthy for the newborn as mother’s milk and you’ve got a home run!  The rest, as they say, is history.

Hey Nestle –  when were you going to think about the well-being of our babies or were you too overcome with greed to worry about a silly thing like that?  No need to answer that…the answer is crystal clear from where I’m sitting.

I can’t help but wonder if Nestle hadn’t been a game-changer by adding SUGAR to infant formula to make it taste good (at 1/2 the price), would we be loading it up with high fructose corn syrup today?  Definitely makes you go “hmm”.

My 2 Cents

If you can’t (or won’t) breastfeed your child please take the time to research baby formula and buy a brand without high fructose corn syrup.  Although there are lots of labels out there that say “all natural” or “organic”  be sure to read and investigate the contents for yourself.  High fructose corn syrup is your enemy!

If you opt for formula, please don’t mix it with tap, bottled or pitcher filtered water.  Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY “Nursery Water” under any brand or circumstances!  It’s not what they want you to believe it is and it has added fluoride.  Contrary to what you’ve been told, fluoride is NOT good for you or your baby and there is plenty of science to back that up.  States that never introduced fluoride into their water systems actually report few cavities AND fewer cases of cancer in children under the age of 14.

Your baby is 90% water and very alkaline at birth.  This is the reason their skin is like silk!   They are ultra hydrated (and just the right pH) naturally.  Thanks, Mom!  The longer they stay that way (hydrated and alkaline) the healthier they’ll be.  Water is a critical component to the health of your child.

The kind of water you  introduce to your baby through formula and food is critical!   I’m often amazed at how many young parents don’t think twice about mixing baby formula with water they wouldn’t dream of drinking themselves. It’s not just about taste, folks.

Your baby is worth the very best money can buy.  The best food and the best water that  you can get your hands on.  If you think  healthy is expensive…you should see what disease costs!

Shhhh…Something is Killing Our Babies!

There is something strange going on in Washington State and newborns are paying the price.  The state is suffering from a strange trend in birth defects and the medical officials are perplexed.   Maybe the medical community can’t put their finger on the underlying problem but you can bet somebody knows. I think it’s time to call in Erin Brockovich.

In 2012 and 2013 there were 25 babies born with a  rare condition called Anencephaly.  This is  400 times the national average. Anencephaly happens when the top portion of the neural tube fails to close during the first month of pregnancy.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke describes this condition as follows:

“A baby born with anencephaly is usually blind, deaf, unaware of its surroundings and unable to feel pain. Although some individuals with anencephaly may be born with a main brain stem, the lack of a functioning cerebrum permanently rules out the possibility of ever gaining awareness of their surroundings. Reflex actions such as breathing and responses to sound or touch may occur.  Most babies  born with this condition die soon after they are born.

It should come as no surprise that a nurse was the first to connect the dots about there being a higher than usual rate of Anencephaly.   In her prior 30 years of nursing experience she had only seen two other cases of Anencephaly so she was alarmed when she heard that her hospital had 2 cases of this rare condition back-to-back and then a third reported at a sister hospital.  That was 22 babies ago and counting.

Although health professionals are scratching their heads (and attempting to keep things quiet), these numbers are far from coincidental.  We may not be able to name the culprit yet but you can bet that the culprit is an environmental toxin and the problem is bigger and more wide-spread than you might care to imagine.  Our government is well aware of the price we’re paying for environmental toxins…just read Reducing Environmental Risk of Cancer…What we Can do Now and you’ll see how big our problems are!

The nurse who first called attention to this “epidemic” is convinced that the problem stems from pesticides used in local farming.  That’s a good possibility but water should not be ruled out either since it is filled with hundreds of chemicals known to cause disease.  Either way, environmental toxins are killing babies at record speed.  When is enough enough?

I sure hope the people in Washington State (and beyond) don’t dismiss this as a fluke and forget it ever happened.   Not only will the babies have died in vain, but it’s just a matter of time before environmental toxins rob them or someone they know of health and (ultimately)  life for generations to come.

These bizarre events were first brought to the public’s attention back in 2012.  So far, no progress has been made in finding a cause.  Go figure.

Baby Boomers…Don’t Count On Feeling Thirsty

You probably don’t have any trouble drinking water when you’re thirsty BUT do you drink water when you’re not?  Unless you make a conscious decision to hydrate you probably don’t.

We rely on the sense of thirst to let us know when we need to add fluids in the same way that most of us  rely on “idiot lights” on the dashboard of our cars to let us know when something’s wrong.  Unfortunately, we can’t count on either.

Not only is the sense of thirst the body’s warning signal that we’re CHRONICALLY dehydrated, but as we age we lose our sense of thirst altogether.  Is it any wonder that nursing homes are filled with dehydrated elderly people?  In case you’ve ever visited a nursing home and commented on “the smell”, rest assured that “smell” comes from the odor of strong urine…a consequence of chronic dehydration.  With no sense of thirst and nobody pushing fluids it should come as no surprise that the elderly are chronically dehydrated (right along with a lot of other misinformed people much younger than they are). I can still remember trying to encourage my mother to drink and I can still hear her saying “I’m not thirsty”.

Consider this a warning…thirsty or not DRINK UP.  The consequences of dehydration go well beyond feeling parched.  Dehydration leads to inflammation…inflammation leads to chronic disease.   A huge price to pay when there is such a simple step to take to avoid the consequences, don’t you think?

The Average American Family Spends $615 a year on bottled water

Stacks_of_moneyThe good news?  Apparently Americans are willing to spend more for (what they perceive to be) “healthy”options

The bad news?  The US Government says that its  better to drink filtered tap water than commercially bottled water.  Read it for yourself on page 111 of the Presidential Cancer Panel Report entitled Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk.    (You should find it interesting that this advice is found within the  “Chemical Exposure” section of the cancer report).

What now America?   Keep spending $615  year after year after year on water that IS KNOWN TO BE BAD FOR YOU (and the planet)  or invest in your own medical grade Kangen Water  ionizer that will produce an endless supply of  pure, safe, ionized, alkaline, micro-clustered water for you and your family year after year after year after year?

Liver Problems for New Jersey Residents?

chemicals-and-cancer-hazardous-toxinsA train derailed in New Jersey this past week causing a tanker containing 25,000 gallons of vinyl chloride to slice open and land in a creek.   Although 70+ people have already been treated for exposure to contaminants,  the state Department of Environmental Protection  said that sensors were not measuring any amounts of the chemical at the site claiming that the vinyl chloride has “evaporated”.    Hmm…  Did it immediately leave the earth”s atmosphere or is it still lingering around for people to breathe?  Your guess is as good as mine.

Breathing the chemical, which is used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a material used to manufacture a variety of plastic and vinyl products including pipes, wire and cable coatings and packaging materials, can make people dizzy or sleepy. Breathing very high levels can cause you to pass out, and breathing extremely high levels can cause death.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “vinyl chloride emissions from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), ethylene dichloride (EDC), and vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) plants cause or contribute to air pollution that may reasonably be anticipated to result in an increase in mortality or an increase in serious irreversible, or incapacitating reversible illness. Vinyl chloride is a known human carcinogen that causes a rare cancer of the liver.[16] EPA’s 2001 updated Toxicological Profile and Summary Health Assessment for VCM in its Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) database lowers EPA’s previous risk factor estimate by a factor of 20 and concludes that “because of the consistent evidence for liver cancer in all the studies…and the weaker association for other sites, it is concluded that the liver is the most sensitive site, and protection against liver cancer will protect against possible cancer induction in other tissues”

Doesn’t sound to me  like some mildly harmful chemical that is inclined to evaporate completely on contact.  If high levels of liver cancer get reported by local residents at some point in the near future, they might think about calling Erin Brockovich.  I’m sure that she’d be happy to get to the truth about vinyl chloride contamination.

“Sandy the Superstorm”…Who Knew There was a “Super Hero”?

I live on the east coast and although we had a fair share of damage from Sandy the Superstorm it was NOTHING compared to what those poor people in New York and New Jersey have experienced.  My heart goes out to them and I wish them the best in working through these horrible circumstances the likes of which I pray I never experience.  They need all of the support they can get HOWEVER what they DON’T need is toxic bottled water and land fill challenges worsened by the addition of millions of more plastic bottles.  There streets (and homes) are filled with tons and tons of refuse already!

When I read this today I couldn’t help but get frustrated over the fact that the bottled water industry keeps growing and growing (and they use every disaster situation as a PR opportunity) when there are other VIABLE, healthy and (in comparison) more affordable options available.   Read it and weep…

Plastics Today – November 5, 2012


Nestlé Waters North America announced that five million bottles of water will be arriving to New York and New Jersey communities hard hit by Hurricane Sandy. Approximately 100 trucks will be converging on the region from (NWNA) plants in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Texas and Maine, where employees are working to meet the acute needs of storm victims. FEMA and the New York Office of Emergency Management made the request for bottled water to meet immediate need in the region.

Nestlé Waters North America is also donating 200,000 bottles of Poland Spring water that had been designated for the NYC Marathon. After the event was cancelled, all of that bottled water is being turned over to relief agencies. This brings total bottled water donations by NWNA to more than 775,000 bottles, most of which have by distributed through disaster relief partners AmeriCares and The American Red Cross.

Walmart has donated roughly one million bottles of water, half going to the five boroughs of New York City and half going to the state of New Jersey.

“The bottled water industry has always been at the forefront of relief efforts during natural disasters and other catastrophic events,” said Chris Hogan IBWA VP of communications, in the news release. “Throughout the years, bottled water companies have immediately responded to the need for clean water after disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, flooding, and wildfires; or the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center.”

“Having access to safe, clean drinking water is important to everyone’s survival, but this becomes paramount during disasters such as this when municipal supplies may become compromised,” Hogan continued. “During these times, bottled water is a necessary and reliable option to deliver clean, safe drinking water.”

If bottled water bans became widespread, what would happen in times of crisis when clean drinking water is not available? I’m not sure if that is something people consider when they rush to ban various products.

You read it right…5 million plastic water bottles and counting!   If you look closely you’ll see that the 5 million bottles are NOT donations but were ordered (and paid for) by FEMA and the New York Office of Emergency Management… tax dollars at work

So what’s the alternative in crisis situations like this?  Commercial grade Kangen Water ionizers in strategic locations and reusable water bottles.  In addition to having a bountiful supply of pure, healthy water, they could have a built-in disinfectant and a green cleaning alternative ALL of which would come in pretty handy at a time like this.   This strategy worked very well in Japan when the Tsunami struck and Kangen was the “Superhero” for the Chilean miners.

It’s no wonder we’re sick and in the midst of a national health crisis!   Somewhere along the way the message of hydration has been blurred.

We have been “sold” on the fact that it doesn’t really matter what you drink as long as you drink plenty of it.   Sodas, coffee, tea,   juice,  energy drinks, beer, wine…it makes no difference as long as you drink enough “fluids” to hydrate you’ll be just fine.

The Institute of Medicine  of the National Academy of Sciences has found that all beverages, including those with caffeine, contribute to total daily hydration. If you’re not in the mood for water, its okay to reach for something else you enjoy like a sports drink, tea or a soft drink.

Although this is a self-serving message there is a little bit of truth to it.  If you are ingesting some sort of fluid you won’t die of dehydration because (by definition) you are hydrated.    There is one HUGE problem with this theory.  The human body is approximately 70% water and it NEEDS PURE, CLEAN, CHEMICAL FREE (preferably Kangen) water.    It ABSOLUTELY DOES matter what you drink IF you want to maintain good health.    There is more to healthy hydration than merely throwing fluids at the problem.  We have clearly bought in to a lie that is wreaking havoc on our health.

Let’s put this in perspective.   As long as you eat a Big Mac you won’t starve to death.  It really doesn’t matter what you eat, technically you will be full  and you won’t starve.   So if you don’t feel like eating healthy “its okay to reach for something else you enjoy” like a Big Mac.   Sound ridiculous?  Maybe so, but lets face it…that is the precisely the rationale that we’re using when it comes to hydration.

Lets get back to reality.  The marketing myths are killing us.
