When Tap Water Turns Toxic…Hard Lessons From Flint

wastewaterThere is a whole lot of talk about water these days, from one end of the country to the other.  Although the water problems in Flint, Michigan have made national news; problems with water safety seem to be springing up well beyond Flint, Michigan.  Washington, DC notably has the highest death rate for colon cancer in the nation and the water source is the biggest suspect for the source of the problem; while the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune has been a hot topic for years due to unusually high rates of cancer and birth defects among our troops and their families.

One  reason for so much attention on Flint, Michigan is that their water problems could (reportedly) have been easily avoided.  Cost cutting measures made way for corrosive water and the lead from corroding pipes made its way into the water supply of Flint residents.  This is a direct violation of EPA guidelines but instead of spending $100 a day in costs to keep the pH levels of the water within EPA range; the authorities ignored the problem.  No doubt this water was used for drinking, for cooking and for bathing.  The long term health consequences associated with this level of lead poisoning is astronomical and Flint residents are left shaking their heads and wondering how the system could have so grossly failed them.

On the heels of the Flint Michigan crisis, residents of Hoosick Falls, New York raised a red flag high enough and long enough to draw the attention of Erin Brockovich, high profile environmental advocate; and now the presses are rolling in Hoosick Falls too.  Hoosick residents have been insisting that their water supply be evaluated due to “suspicious” cases of cancer within their community.  Though the mayor of Hoosick Falls stated that the water had been tested numerous times over the span of the year; unsafe levels of PFOA, a toxic chemical that can be found in household cleaning products was found at unsafe levels in their water supply.  PFOA is not a regulated contaminant and did not have enforceable standards in spite of the fact that this chemical has been linked to kidney and testicular cancer as well as other health issues, according to the New York State Department of Health.

The wastewater treatment process is a complex system and one that can’t reasonably be expected to operate with perfection in spite of well-meaning efforts.  Regulators are armed with (up to) 300 legally allowable chemicals to turn human waste into potable water but it comes with a price.   Though the known carcinogenic additives are only introduced to the systems at “safe levels”; safe levels are directly related to individual use,  from drinking water to showers.  There is no such thing as a safe level of carcinogens when it comes to our children.

The Presidential Cancer Panel offered advice for our water consumption as rendered in a 2009 N.I.H study entitled Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk…What We Can Do Now (available free online).  This is what the report has to say about our water if we want to reduce the risk of cancer:  “Filtering home tap or well water can decrease exposure to known or suspected carcinogens and endocrine disrupting chemicals.  Unless the home water source is known to be contaminated, it is best to use filtered tap water instead of commercially bottled water”.  I don’t know about you, but if the government tells me that a step to reduce the risk of cancer is to avoid plastic bottles and filter my tap water instead; that’s what I’m doing.

Having running water at our fingertips and the ability flush a toilet at will is a luxury that is foreign to most of the world.  We have the wastewater treatment process to thank for an endless supply into our homes at a nominal price.  In spite of the challenges that come with water treatment; none of us could (or would want to) live without the luxury of an endless supply of potable water flowing through our homes no matter how many chemicals it takes to get us there… but expecting perfection with the process is outside of the realm of reason.  However, there are steps that each one of us can take on our own just as Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk…What we can do Now” suggests) to assure that our water is safe and healthy.

Every jurisdiction in America is required to post details of the status of their local wastewater treatment as well as the chemicals used for the treatment online.  Though most of us aren’t familiar with the chemicals used in the process; it’s still a good idea to be informed.  After that, there are options well beyond pitcher filters that go a long way in making the treated water that comes into your home a whole lot healthier for you and your family.    It’s time to take responsibility on our own and to stop pointing fingers at an imperfect system of providing potable water.

Though the wastewater treatment process can’t be expected to operate with perfection; I’m doing my part to assure that my family drinks, cooks and bathes in the safest, healthiest water in spite of the source water problem.  Our water device filters out 98% of lead (and other metals), chlorine, fluoride, and a host of other things. Our system ZAPS parasites so that they don’t stand a chance to be a problem for us AND because our water is ionized, trace chemicals and metals that aren’t filtered out are mostly discharged and not accessible in our drinking water.

MY FAMILY HAS TAKEN SERIOUS ACTION TO ASSURE THAT WE HAVE SAFE, HEALTHY WATER IN OUR HOME. Flint, Michigan residents were SOLD OUT for $100 a day expense to avoid their problem.   Will you sell out your family for pennies a day?  Take action today!  Contact me!!!

Attorney General Targets Stores Over Water Price Gouging…You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet!

pricesWe’re all familiar with the water contamination tragedy that struck West Virginia late last year.  After all, it was headline news week after week.  Those poor people will experience their own Agent Orange-like health challenges for generations to come.  Just ask Erin Brockovich about the long term impact on health for those exposed to toxic waste.

Anytime there is a natural (or unnatural) disaster,  the piranha prepare to take advantage of those less fortunate by peddling the necessities at astronomical prices.   That’s nothing new and that’s precisely what happened in  West Virginia last year.   The state’s attorney general is now accusing a West Virginia convenience store company of illegally raising water prices when the chemical spill left 300,000 people without  usable tap water.   Nice try attorney general, but this attempt at heroics doesn’t fly.  There aren’t any laws that fix pricing on the necessities (in or out of a disaster).   If that was the case, vending machines that raise the prices of drinks based on the outside temperature would be outlawed.  Instead, the concept has been labeled “brilliant” by leaders in the beverage industry.

Don’t look now but there is another water crisis brewing that impacts ALL of us and that makes the price-gouging-water-crisis in West Virginia look like child’s play.

California produces 90% of the nation’s fruits and vegetables.  We have been warned that the prices for these things will increase by 30% over the next year.    Generally, what drives  price increases comes down to supply and demand.  The lingering drought in California (and a government not willing to release water reserves) will create astronomical demand and unbelievable prices for Americans.  Rest assured, they’ll charge whatever the market will bear and there won’t be anybody around fighting to fix prices when our food prices go through the roof.

It’s time to make some serious changes and it’s time to stop depending on somebody else to provide you with your every need.  There may come a time for you when water is not available (or safe to drink) and when produce prices are beyond your means.

Get control of your own water and food resources.  It’s time to buy local food (and support your local farmers) and it’s time to invest in the best water ionizer that you can get your hands on so that you can produce an endless supply of healthy water 24/7 without getting gouged.   Don’t look now but you’ve been getting gouged on water prices for so long that you don’t even notice it!  Unless of course, you think that $6.00 a gallon for bottled water is reasonable.  Hmm…

If you’re one of the lucky ones with an endless supply of financial resources, good for you!  If you don’t mind being at the mercy of everybody else for your every need then keep it up!  You might want to talk to those folks in West Virginia though.  I’m guessing that they are far more prepared (and more independent) than ever before and I’m willing to bet that they have a new appreciation for water.

As for me?  I drink what Erin Brockovich drinks, of course!  Does anything else make sense to you?

Criminal Consequences for Water Contamination? Should Be!

water-droplet-iconExposure to contaminated water is wreaking havoc on the health of those who serve our Country.  If this negligence is acceptable treatment for our troops, what do you suppose is acceptable for the rest of us?

Here are just a few to get your blood boiling:

#1 – According to  reports, 376,377 defense contractor employees assigned in 2003 to rebuild a water pumping facility in Iraq and National Guardsmen from several states responsible for their security were exposed to  hexavalent chromium that was left at the site. The chemical was originally used to remove and prevent corrosion in the water pipes.  While on site, many of the exposed individuals suffered skin sores, nose bleeds, nausea, stomach pain, and respiratory problems, including coughing up blood.  Many  still have residual respiratory and other ailments to this day and there is a slow but sure reporting of lung and sinus cancer that can (and should) be directly linked to their chromium exposure.

# 2 –  A new report by the Federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease shows that the decades-long case of drinking water contamination at Camp Lejeune is one of the worst on record. Tap water supplied to base housing contains toxic chemicals and known carcinogens including benzenevinyl chloride and trichloroethylene at levels that significantly exceed “legal limits”.  Veterans and there families have been poisoned at Camp Lejeune (and God knows where else) since 1948.  The civilian penalty for this negligence would be  multiple life prison sentences but since this is a government “oversight” we’ll excuse it as a big mistake.  Tell that to the thousands of cancer patients coming out of Camp Lejeune since 1948.  Veterans, fathers, sons, wives,  mothers, children, grandchildren.   What a way to treat those willing to serve our country!

Where is Erin Brockovich when we need her?  Perhaps even Erin isn’t bold enough to take on the U.S. government.

Take control of your water NOW.  Make sure your understand the source, the problems and the solution.  By changing your water you can profoundly change your life.

Join Erin Brockovich and me (and a whole lot of others).   We both understand the problem and potential dangers of water AND we drink only the BEST…Kangen Water.  Of course, our solution is a whole lot more than a simple water filter.  It actually has medicinal properties and it allows us to eliminate other harmful chemicals that are also polluting our water sources.   Hmm….social responsibility.  Now THAT’S a novel concept!  Want to join us?

Erin Brockovich Knows A Thing or Two About Water…What Kind Does SHE Drink?

Erin Brockovich was key in the discovery of contaminated ground water that was proven to have been the cause of cancer and reproductive problems with a vast number of Hinkley, CA residents.  The 1993 case against Pacific Gas & Electric was recognized as the largest settlement of its kind in US history. Although a price cannot be put on human life and health,  justice was served.  Erin Brockovich has become quite an expert on water and water contaminants.

So, what does a “water expert” like Erin Brockovich drink?  Nothing but the best, of course!  The purest, healthiest water she can get her hands on…Kangen Water.  Go Erin!  I think that it’s safe to assume  that Erin made an educated decision when she purchased her water system.   Anything less from her when it comes to water is unimaginable!

Erin is an advocate for water conservation and works hard to raise awareness about water shortages across the globe.  With her Kangen Water ionizer Erin is able to filter and RESTRUCTURE her tap water into the finest water on the planet!  There is no need to fear tap water if you have the right water system on your side!

Erin is also an environmental advocate  and she refuses to add to the plastic water bottle crisis around the world.  Here is her winning  recipe:

1 glass/stainless container + Kangen Water = GREEN/RESPONSIBLE Water
