Why Are Seniors Prone To Respiratory Issues? Dehydration, Of Course!

Image result for senior drinking water IMAGESometimes the solution is SO simple that most people miss it…especially in a world more focused on prescriptions than logic.  Not drinking enough (if any) water is a common UN-RECOGNIZED problem that puts our seniors at UNNECESSARY risk day after day all across America.  Water is the most important nutrient for the human body and when we refuse to consume it we pay the price…especially our seniors.  It doesn’t take much for a dehydrated body to succumb to things like respiratory issues when the lungs lack the fluids they were designed to have!  How can we expect a body to fight back if we refuse to give it what it needs to do battle?

“SO MANY HEALTH ISSUES ARE RELATED TO DEHYDRATION”

As we age we lose our sense of thirst, so if hydrating is a matter of “feeling thirsty” we’ll likely remain dehydrated.   Sometimes hospitals look more like hydration stations than treatment centers.  Just hook-up an I.V. bag to a chronically dehydrated person and you’ll likely see a turnaround in no time at all!  That’s not to say that antibiotics aren’t sometimes necessary too, but consuming enough good old H2O naturally laced with minerals is the key to avoiding all kinds of ailments.

“So many health issues are related to inadequate hydration,” including urinary tract and respiratory infections, frequent falls and other problems, said study author Janet Mentes. She is a professor of nursing at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

According to the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, adults older than 65 have the highest hospital admission rates for dehydration In fact, when it comes to conditions brought on by dehydration, there was a 5% increase in “preventable emergency department visits” between 2008 and 2012 alone!  Apparently we aren’t catching-on to the NEED to dehydrate to stay healthy and we’re filling up the emergency rooms over something that could so simply be avoided. 

“UNDERLYING DEHYDRATION NOT RECOGNIZED”

“Many seniors are under-hydrated for a long period of time, and when they are exposed to a virus or bacteria they are more likely to develop an infection, such as urinary tract infections, pneumonia or other respiratory diseases,” Mentes said in a UCLA news release.

“And they will be treated for the infection, but the underlying under-hydration will not be recognized,” she added. “Thus, an opportunity to educate the individual about adequate fluid intake is missed.”

NOT JUST “PLENTY OF FLUIDS”

I’m not sure where the “plenty of fluids” agenda came from, but absolutely nothing replaces the body’s need for water naturally laced with minerals.  Not dying of thirst (by consuming some sort of fluid) and remaining hydrated are two very different things!  Attempting to hydrate with bottled water isn’t going to cut it because all vital minerals have been REMOVED from bottled water  – the body NEEDS those minerals in water to perform!  I wonder, can bottled water categorically be referred to as “water” if there are no minerals that define the H20?  

WRITE YOUR OWN PRESCRIPTION!

Everyone…everywhere…especially our seniors… should begin writing their own “prescription” for proper hydration beginning TODAY.

Make a commitment to drink the volume of water your body needs to properly function.   Most people require a minimum of 64 ounces of water a day!

If you don’t like the idea of tap or well water (I sure don’t) then find a water solution to help you filter out the bad and make your water HEALTHY without removing vital minerals.  If you need help figuring that part out,  this short-read will help you identify water that is actually beneficial to the human body so that you can avoid drinking water that does you more harm than good!

Keep a log if you need to!  All those little “sips” don’t usually add up to enough water to keep a plant live! Do whatever you have to do to be sure you’re drinking as much as your body NEEDS.  

Maybe if instructions for proper hydration were written on a prescription pad LOTS of people would be sure to do it!  Since that isn’t likely to happen, be true to yourself!
