The health risks of radon gas have been clearly recognized by organizations such as the National Academy of Sciences, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, the American Lung Association, the American Medication Association and the EPA.
Radon is a known human carcinogen and is estimated to be the second leading cause of lung cancer. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. Radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year
The primary source of radon is from uranium in soils and rocks. Over time uranium decays into radium, which then decays directly into radon. Radon gases naturally permeate from granite counter tops. The EPA says that ANY level of radon is an “unsafe” level of radon.
With lung cancer rates 2nd only to smoking, I’d reconsider those beautiful counter tops if I were you. They may symbolize affluence in the home but luxury loses it’s dazzle in the midst of cancer.
