Not too long ago that I would have laughed at the idea that anything could REALLY be cleaned by using “green” products. After all, if it doesn’t have harsh chemicals and a great fragrance how in the world could it possibly do the job, right? At some point, maybe I’ll learn to NEVER say “never”. Out of curiosity I’ve been doing a little research on my own. What I found has been shocking.
My quest began when I started pondering why Sodium Hydroxide/caustic soda (Lye) is added to municipal water systems to raise the pH to a neutral 7.0 at the same time it is added to cleaning products like detergent and soap. The “secret” is in the pH. The pH of Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) is 13.5…strong enough to burn the skin or cause death if ingested. Due to the risks associated with exposure to pure Lye, it is no longer available for purchase on the open market.
Lye has been around (almost) forever. The first evidence of the use of (lye) soap goes back to Babylon around 2800 B.C. where it was unearthed in archaeological excavations. For this time period, Lye would have consisted of a mixture of wood ash and water. It is theorized that tribal people could have discovered this solution by washing their cooking supplies that were laden with animal fat and cooking ash in water, inadvertently making the first soaps.
During the Roman Empire, historians write that the ashes from animal sacrifices coupled with the fat (lard) from the animals produced a foaming agent that they soon discovered had the unique ability to clean. In the early stages of discovery it was used on the wool and cotton to clean it prior to being spun
Today, sodium hydroxide/Lye has hundreds of uses. We use it to control the pH of cosmetics and body products as well as to produce soap and detergent. Truth be told, if we didn’t have Lye, we wouldn’t have soap. But what does Lye actually do? Lye is a powerful dissolving agent due to its high pH value. All other ingredients are added to solidify and add fragrance to the cleaning agent (Lye).
So, what is the purpose of this tangent of mine? It’s very simple. I have been sharing high alkaline Kangen Water® (11.5pH) with my friends and family for a long time now. We have used it to do our laundry, to clean the carpets, spot clean clothes, and de-grease ovens. We have soaked our fruits and veggies to remove the residual pesticides, we’ve used it in place of harsh baby wipes…we’ve even used it to rinse our teeth to aid in the natural whitening process. Pain free, chemical free, risk free cleaning with WATER! I didn’t understand why and how this high alkaline water works so well…until now. No Lye…no lie!
