In the U.S., a baby is born with a birth defect every four minutes. In fact, according to the CDC, 1 out of every 5 deaths in the first year of life is caused by a birth defect.
In addition to the tremendous burden on families, birth defects take a toll on economics too…at the rate of $2.6 billion a year. It should come as no surprise that doctors and pharmaceutical firms play a big role in the rate of birth defects we’re seeing today by over-prescribing heroin-based products (opioids) to anyone with an ache or pain and with no regard for the consequences. Women of child bearing years should not be prescribed opioids!
Opioids like hydrocodone (Vicodin), oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet), morphine (Kadian, Avinza), codeine, are known to reduce the pain signals reaching the brain. They also numb the areas of the brain that cause emotion which “diminishes the effects of a painful stimulus”. Opium-based heroin has been numbing emotions (and destroying lives) for hundreds of years. Putting a prescription label on a bottle heroin doesn’t change what it is.
Researchers found that the risk of birth defects were highest when opium-based painkillers were taken within the first few weeks of a pregnancy. Since most pregnancies are surprises, mom is likely popping pain killers within those first few high-risk weeks (and beyond). With the popular pain killers being highly addictive (heroin usually is), lots of moms won’t kick the habit no matter what’s at risk. Sad but true.
From where I’m sitting I know that most pain can be managed without the need for opioids. Lots of pain stems from abusing your body by not giving it what it needs to battle those problems that are causing you pain. I went from a lifelong journey of chronic pain to being pain free JUST by making a few changes to give my body what it needed to start mending itself. The most significant change that I made is that I traded Diet Coke for ionized, alkalized, electrically charged, anti-oxidant water. No more pain OR Percocet for me!
If you, or someone you love, are in child bearing years and using opioids for whatever ails you, PLEASE STOP! The next generation deserves a drug-free fighting chance and we hold the key to doing everything (or not doing everything) to assure that they get it!
Are you using opioids for your pain?
There is a better way!
