Heavy Drinker? Nah…You Need a Six-Pack a Day!

six packIn my normal course of business I  routinely ask people how much water they drink.  More often than not they’ll respond with “a lot!” but when I really dig deeper  and push for the answer to “how much is a lot?” I find that they aren’t heavy drinkers at all!

In 2011 total bottled water sales in the U.S. hit 9.1 billion gallons.  This equates to 29.2 gallons of water per person… 222 bottles of water for each person in the country or 4 bottles of water for every man, woman and child in America according to the Beverage Marketing Corporation.  Sounds like a lot doesn’t it?  Dream on!  You need a six-pack (of HEALTHY water)  a day to keep the doctor away!

When hospitalized, the average adult will be “prescribed” an IV of 64 ounces of fluids per day.  This is the ABSOLUTE minimum needed to maintain hydration in a sedentary state.  Sixty four ounces of fluids each day equates to 182.5 gallons per year.  Naturally if you’re going to move beyond the hospital bed  you’ll need a whole lot more water than 64 ounces to efficiently hydrate the body in motion.

“Americans are drinking more bottled water because they find it convenient, appealing and also healthy,” says Gary Hemphill, who is managing director for information services at Beverage Marketing, and a longtime observer of bottled water and beverage sales in the U.S. and around the world.

I understand why you might find it more convenient to carry a disposable water bottle and I guess I can understand why some of you would actually believe that just because a label mentions some unknown spring somewhere that it actually comes from some exotic place (ha!) BUT I can’t understand how you can ignore the warnings of harmful plastics used as bottles for your water though you’ve been warned over and over again.

Apparently Americans are either too lazy to make healthy changes or grossly addicted to a product that is harmful to their health.  They definitely have more money than they know what to do with if they continue to buy bottled water day after day and year after year in spite of the fact that its doing more harm than good.

If you insist on taking the lazy (unhealthy) way out just keep in mind that you’ll need to drink a six-pack a day to properly hydrate the body…not just that bottle or two a day you’re toting around now like a fashion statement.

Do me one favor.  When we meet and I ask you how much water you drink, tell the truth.  The real answer is “not nearly enough”.

Bottoms up Boomers!
