When I traveled to China a few years ago I was surprised to find that ice is not commonly served in restaurants. In fact, instead of cold water being served, you’re served very warm water because it is believed to aid in the digestive process. The basis of this belief is that when you drink cold fluids with a meal you slow digestion down (while the stomach works to heat the fluids) and a slowed digestive process is believed to be a link to obesity. Makes sense to me!
I rarely have a drink with ice. I prefer my water to be room temperature and my coffee to be hot. Lessons from my Asian friends along with the results of this U.K. study is all that is needed for me to kick the ice habit. How about you?

“Scientific tests have shown that ice from branches of McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC, Starbucks, Cafe Rouge and Nando’s all had higher levels of bacteria than samples of water taken from their lavatory bowls.
Experts say it could be due to them being cleaned more often than the ice machines… The Burger King result suggested the cause was human contamination, likely to be from a staff member failing to wash their hands.”
Bottoms-up Boomers! Its time to kick the ice habit!
