MYTH: Everyone who has a positive BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 test result will get breast cancer.
FALSE: While women with a “positive” BRCA test (reportedly) have a much higher chance of cancer (not just breast cancer), it is not a death sentence in terms of the development of breast cancer.
Conversely, testing negative for the gene does not mean that one will never develop breast cancer – 90 to 95% of women who develop breast cancer do not have a “BRCA inherited gene mutation” at all.
Obviously, this complex (and financially unobtainable for most) genetic testing leaves a whole lot of questions unanswered. Is all of this in the name of science or has science gone too far by feeding on our fears of the big “C”?
I don’t judge Angelina Jolie for her decision, but I do criticize her for being a poor role model by enhancing the fear factor surrounding breast cancer and for making her elective mastectomy look glamorous. My favorite book says “To whom much is given, much will be required”. I would have expected more of Angelina Jolie than to promote a mastectomy as a viable method of breast cancer prevention. Perhaps my expectation level is too high.
I wonder how many women would be rushing off for genetic testing and a mastectomy if they had the financial means to do so. I also wonder how many would rush off to get an elective mastectomy if immediate breast reconstruction wasn’t a possibility. I’m willing to bet that more thought would be given to this radical approach to prevention if women were left with mastectomy scars and prosthetics instead of perfectly enhanced breasts.
Shortly after Angelina’s PR campaign surrounding her elective mastectomy, a male BRCA mutation carrier had “preventative surgery” to remove his prostate. How many body parts will be removed as a means of preventing cancer?
There are many healthy steps to be taken in an attempt to avoid cancer. None of them quite as radical as chopping off body parts, but effective nonetheless. I hope that you’ll cancel surgery and join me on a wellness quest. No matter what label you put on cells, acidosis is the fuel that fires cancer cells. Properly hydrating the body while raising the alkaline level to avoid acidosis is priceless in terms of prevention!
